New Release Books

Today’s first Featured New Release is Girl Waits with Gun ($12.99 Kindle), by Amy Stewart [Houghton Mifflin Harcourt]. A September 2015 Indie Next Pick; a Publishers Marketplace Buzz Book of 2015, Fall/Winter; Starred Reviews: Booklist, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly & Library Journal. I really like the retro cover on this one. What about you?

Book Description
From the New York Times best-selling author of The Drunken Botanist comes an enthralling novel based on the forgotten true story of one of the nation’s first female deputy sheriffs.

Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

“A smart, romping adventure, featuring some of the most memorable and powerful female characters I’ve seen in print for a long time. I loved every page as I followed the Kopp sisters through a too-good-to-be-true (but mostly true!) tale of violence, courage, stubbornness, and resourcefulness.” — Elizabeth Gilbert

About the Author
AMY STEWART is the award-winning author of six books, including the bestsellers The Drunken Botanist, Wicked Plants and The Last Bookstore In America. She and her husband live in Eureka, California, where they own a bookstore called Eureka Books.

Today’s second Featured New Release is The Secrets of Blood and Bone: A Novel ($9.99 Kindle), by Rebecca Alexander [Broadway Books]. Her earlier novel, The Secrets of Life and Death, is on sale for $1.99 – be sure to grab it, even if the new release only goes to the wishlist.

Book Description
In the stunning follow up to The Secrets of Life and Death, Rebecca Alexander has created a gripping supernatural thriller that bridges time, legend and the power of blood.

Following her showdown with Elizabeth Bathory, Jackdaw Hammond is running from her past, hiding from her future, and hoping to contain her newfound thirst for blood. Buying an overgrown home in the middle of nowhere seems like the perfect place to escape…at least until she finds herself in the sights of a murderous family with a terrible secret and a penchant for dark magic. Meanwhile, her old ally Felix Guichard has gone to New Orleans to conduct his own investigation into the nature of blood magic, but is soon sucked into the intrigues of the city’s occult underworld. But Jack will need Felix more than she knows, for the battle for her soul is set to begin.

Her only salvation may lie with the secrets of 16th century master occultist Edward Kelley, and a dangerous mission he undertook in Venice to confront the Inquisition, the darkest deeds of his own past, and the fearsome power of Elizabeth Bathory.

About the Author
Rebecca Alexander fell in love with all things sorcery, magic and witchcraft as a teenager and has enjoyed reading and writing fantasy ever since. She wrote her first book aged nineteen and since then has been runner up in the Mslexia novel writing competition and the Yeovil Literary Prize 2012. Trained in psychology and education, and having researched magical thinking in adults for her MSc, Rebecca met some really interesting people in some very odd circumstances, which she could no longer resist writing down. She lives in a haunted house by the sea with her second husband, four cats, three chickens and the occasional rook.

Daily Deals 09/06/15

Over at B&N, today’s Daily Find is a very good mystery by P. D. James, An Unsuitable Job for a Woman, the start of the Cordelia Gray series. Most definitely not price matched at Amazon, I’ve reported the lower price and hope enough others do that it drops later today (otherwise, I’ll have to wait for it at the library). Audible has a well-reviewed memoir by Matthew Berry about fantasy sports and Kobo has an end-of-summer beach read, Holly Chamberlin’s Last Summer, which is better than price matched at Amazon for the moment. In the Kindle Daily Deals, we get two legal thrillers (both of which I have) and a fun Sci-Fi adventure (got that one too) and a Guns N’ Roses biography with extra Audio/Video features for those with an iThing and most Kindle Fire tablets (and it’s under a buck).

Kobo is having an End of Summer Sale – save up to 70% on great reads! A check of John Grogan’s Marley and Lisa Jackson’s author page at Amazon shows price matching, so I suspect we’ll find the same on many other titles in the sale.

Today on Amazon’s Gold Box, save up to 51% on Gel Memory Foam 10 inch Mattress by ExceptionalSheets – Made in the USA. In the Bonus Deal of the Day, save up to 70% on Fall Jackets for Men, Women & Kids and save 37% on a 8-Person Red Canyon Tent by Coleman. Coming up in the Lightning Deals there should be a very good deal on a Cuisinart CPC-600 Electric Pressure Cooker, as it’s already more than 50% off before the deal starts; for those that grab the tent, there are some Solo Stove items coming up later in the Lightning Deals, as well, including the Campfire (their largest stove) that we use when camping.

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is two novels by Sean Chercover for $1.99 each [Thomas & Mercer].

The Trinity Game (The Game Trilogy Book 1)2013 International Thriller Award Nominee

Daniel Byrne is an investigator for the Vatican’s secretive Office of the Devil’s Advocate—the department that scrutinizes miracle claims. Over ten years and 721 cases, not one miracle he tested has proved true. But case #722 is different; Daniel’s estranged uncle, a crooked TV evangelist, has started speaking in tongues—and accurately predicting the future. Daniel knows Reverend Tim Trinity is a con man. Could Trinity also be something more?

The evangelist himself is baffled by his newfound power—and the violent reaction it provokes. After years of scams, he suddenly has the ability to predict everything from natural disasters to sports scores. Now the mob wants him dead for ruining their gambling business, and the Vatican wants him debunked as a false messiah. On the run from assassins, Trinity flees with Daniel’s help through the back roads of the Bible Belt to New Orleans, where Trinity plans to deliver a final prophecy so shattering his enemies will do anything to keep him silent.

The Devil’s Game (The Game Trilogy Book 2)

The universe is trying to tell us something.

Daniel Byrne spent ten years as a Vatican investigator, scrutinizing and debunking miracle claims—until he burned that life to the ground when one investigation shook his faith and revealed disturbing earthly conspiracies. Determined to find the truth, he steps into a new life of secrets and lies, joining a powerful group that wields hidden influence over world events.

Daniel infiltrates a covert government facility and uncovers a bizarre new strain of the Plague that seems to flood the minds of its victims with visions of the future. Teaming up with disgraced physician Kara Singh, a woman beset with inexplicable visions of her own, Daniel traces the root of this deadly pathogen around the globe, and discovers a terrifying truth.

In this fast-paced sequel to the bestselling The Trinity Game, can Daniel navigate a shadow world of secrets and conspiracy to stop a pandemic with devastating global consequences?

New Release Books

If you want to ensure a stress-free holiday season, you might want to check out Get Yourself Organized for Christmas, featured at Christian Books on the Knob today.

Today’s first Featured New Release is Vienna: A Novel ($12.99 Kindle), by William S. Kirby [Forge Books / Macmillan].

Book Description
It started as nothing more than a one-night stand . . .

Justine is an A-list fashion model on a photo shoot in Europe. Adored by half the world, she can have whomever she wants, but she’s never met anyone like the strange English girl whose bed she wakes up in one morning.

Vienna is an autistic savant, adrift in a world of overwhelming patterns and connections only she can see. Socially awkward and inexperienced, she’s never been with anyone before, let alone a glamorous supermodel enmeshed in a web of secrets and intrigue.

When Justine’s current beau is murdered in the bathroom of her hotel room, she suddenly finds herself thrown into the middle of a deadly conspiracy focusing on a set of antique wooden mannikins-the same ones that are the centerpieces of the photo shoot.

What secret do the mannikins hide, and why is it worth killing over?

Drawn together by an attraction neither of them can explain, Justine and Vienna are pursued across Europe by paparazzi, tabloid headlines . . . and the mystery of Vienna’s own shadowy past, which holds the key to everything.

Inspired by a classic Sherlock Holmes story, William S. Kirby’s Vienna reimagines Holmes and Watson for the 21st century.

The heart-stopping third book in the New York Times bestselling Asylum series follows three teens as they take a senior year road trip to one of America’s most haunted cities, uncovering dangerous secrets from their past along the way. With all the thrills, chills, and eerie found photographs that led Publishers Weekly to call Asylum “a strong YA debut,” Catacomb is perfect for fans for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Sometimes the past is better off buried.

Senior year is finally over. After all they’ve been through, Dan, Abby, and Jordan are excited to take one last road trip together, and they’re just not going to think about what will happen when the summer ends. But on their way to visit Jordan’s uncle in New Orleans, the three friends notice that they’re being followed . . . and photographed. Then Dan starts receiving messages from someone he didn’t expect to hear from again—someone who died last Halloween.

When the trio arrives in New Orleans and the strange occurrences only escalate, Dan is forced to accept that everything that has happened to him in the past year may not be a coincidence, but fate—a fate that ties Dan to a group called the Bone Artists, who have a sinister fascination with notorious killers of the past.
