Greetings from windy South Dakota, where I am visiting family. No matter where you are, you have to eat and today’s bargain books have some good ideas on how to prepare it. These are all from HarperCollins’ Christian publishing imprint Thomas Nelson, but that doesn’t mean that all of them have a heavy religious message; most of their cookbooks, I’ve found, do not have a message to impart other than a celebration of good food. Of the cookbooks included today, I have The Blue Ribbon Country Cookbook, which runs to almost 700 pages in print; it’s much easier to take it along with me, tucked onto the iPad. I won’t take too long to decide which of these to buy, though, as Thomas Nelson’s cookbook sales are often only a day or two in length. Maybe one of them will have a new idea on what to do with the free fresh eggs and tomatoes we were given at one of the campgrounds where we stayed?

The Blue Willow Inn Cookbook: Discover Why the Best Small-Town Restaurant in the South is in Social Circle, Georgia ($1.99 Kindle), by Michael Stern and Jane Stern
Book Description
Chicken and Dumplings, Fried Green Tomatoes, Cornbread, Collard Greens, and Sugared Pecans!
By any measure, the Blue Willow Inn in Social Circle, Georgia is as southern as you can get. Proprietor Billie Van Dyke says that no one is allowed to leave hungry, and certainly no one should after feasting on a variety of Southern salads, meats, vegetables, breads and desserts and, of course, sweet tea, the “Champagne of the South,” and lemonade. Housed in a gloriously restored southern mansion, The Blue Willow Inn is home to Southern hospitality and charm at its best.
The Blue Willow Inn Cookbook offers delicious Southern recipes, vintage pictures from the early days of Social Circle, and fascinating anecdotes about the restaurant. It’s a book that’s wonderful for reading or for cooking.
The greatest restaurants in America are its wonderful independent regional restaurants. And there are no greater experts on America’s regional restaurants than Michael and Jane Stern. “Coast to coast,” said the New York Times, “they know where to find the freshest lobster rolls, the fluffiest pancakes, the crispiest catfish.”
Carbone’s Cookbook: Old-World Elegance and the Best Italian Food in the Northeast ($1.99 Kindle), by Michael Stern and Jane Stern
Book Description
While Italian restaurants are popular throughout the United States, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut make up the part of the country most associated with the great ones. And one of the best is Carbone’s in Hartford, Connecticut.
Founded sixty-five years ago, Carbone’s is Hartford’s oldest and best-reviewed restaurant. The founder, Charlie Carbone, learned some of his best recipes from New York restaurants by going into their kitchens, posing as a health inspector, and watching their chefs. In the 1960’s, chef Gaetano Carbone created a weekly special and many of these recipes by “the master” are in the book. Vinnie Carbone continues the family tradition and has a unique way of catering special events.
Carbone’s Cookbook not only contains the creative recipes of Executive Chef Paul Rafella and Michael McDowell, but also takes you inside a real family-owned Italian restaurant. Well into its second half-century, Carbone’s is famous for its Veal All Bergamo, Roasted Mushrooms, Scampi Popalardo, Filetto do Manzo and Salmone Alla Senape.
In keeping with the tradition of celebrating the finest regional restaurants in the United States, Carbone’s is the sixth restaurant in the United States to be chosen to be a Roadfood cookbook by authors Jane and Michael Stern.
