Daily Deals 07/24/15

The Kobo Daily Deal, The Highway, is a thriller in the Joe Pickett series from Edgar Award Winner and New York Times bestselling author C. J. Box. His standalone novel, Blue Heaven, is on sale for $2.99, as well. In the Kindle Daily Deals, I have two of the three Michael Koryta novels and will have to add the third to my TBR list. I also have all of the Sunwalker Saga novels by Shéa MacLeod, both of Patrick Weekes’ novels and Returner’s Wealth by Paul Stewart, from today’s Deals; I need an afternoon off so I can read one or two!

Today on Amazon’s Gold Box, a Sylvania 7-Inch Portable DVD Player for $39.99 (save 43%). In the Bonus Deal of the Day, save up to 43% on Select Lifestraw Products, while they last. The last time I saw these on a Daily Deal, they sold out. If you hike or your family gets into an emergency situation, where water supply might be compromised, a personal LifeStraw or water bottle could mean the difference in staying healthy (and doesn’t require a heating source for boiling). Either provides filtered water for roughly a year, if you drink 3 liters a day. The Family Water Purifier is one of the items I keep on our “just in case shelf” (well protected from insects or rodents) and hope we never need to use. If we do, it can filter about a three-year supply of drinking water. With their Follow the Liters program, for every LifeStraw water filter sold, a child in Africa receives an entire year of clean drinking water at school.

Amazon is running a Kindle Summer Reading contest for parents. Share a picture of your child reading for a chance to win “a Kindle prize pack for the whole family.” If your kids like audiobooks, Audible has a great page put together with Summer Reading suggestions for every age group, from Kindergarten to older teens. For paper (and Kindle) books, check out Amazon’s Best Children’s Books of 2015 (so far) page.

Barnes & Noble is having a Summer Clearance Sale, with (print) books starting at $1.99. Quantities are limited, so check it out early.

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is three pulse-racing Summer reads by New York Times bestselling author Michael Koryta for $1.99 each [Little, Brown and Company / Hachette].

The Ridge – Publishers Weekly Starred Review; Library Journal Starred Review

In an isolated stretch of eastern Kentucky, on a hilltop known as Blade Ridge, stands a lighthouse that illuminates nothing but the surrounding woods. One day its builder is found dead at the top of the light, and his belongings reveal a troubling local history.

For deputy sheriff Kevin Kimble, the lighthouse-keeper’s death is disturbing and personal. Years ago, Kimble was shot while on duty. Somehow the death suggests a connection between the lighthouse and the most terrifying moment of his life.

Audrey Clark is in the midst of moving her large-cat sanctuary onto land adjacent to the lighthouse. Sixty-seven tigers, lions, leopards, and one legendary black panther are about to have a new home there. Her husband, the sanctuary’s founder, died scouting the new property, and Audrey is determined to see his vision through.

As strange occurrences multiply at the Ridge, the animals grow ever more restless, and Kimble and Audrey try to understand what evil forces are moving through this ancient landscape, just past the divide between dark and light.

The Prophet

Adam Austin hasn’t spoken to his brother in years. When they were teenagers, their sister was abducted and murdered, and their devastated family never recovered. Now Adam keeps to himself, scraping by as a bail bondsman, working so close to the town’s criminal fringes that he sometimes seems a part of them.

Kent Austin is the beloved coach of the local high school football team, a religious man and hero in the community. After years of near misses, Kent’s team has a shot at the state championship, a welcome point of pride in a town that has had its share of hardships.

Just before playoffs begin, the town and the team are thrown into shock when horrifically, impossibly, another teenage girl is found murdered. As details emerge that connect the crime to the Austin brothers, the two must confront their buried rage and grief-and unite to stop a killer.

Michael Koryta, widely hailed as one of the most exciting young thriller authors at work today, has written his greatest novel ever-an emotionally harrowing, unstoppably suspenseful novel that Donald Ray Pollock has called “one of the sharpest and superbly plotted crime novels I’ve read in my life.”

The Cypress House

A journey to Florida’s coast becomes an inescapable nightmare in the newest supernatural thriller from international bestseller Michael Koryta.

Arlen Wagner has seen it in men before–a trace of smoke in their eyes that promises imminent death. He is never wrong.

When Arlen awakens on a train one hot Florida night and sees death’s telltale sign in the eyes of his fellow passengers, he tries to warn them. Only 19-year-old Paul Brickhill believes him, and the two abandon the train, hoping to escape certain death. They continue south, but soon are stranded at the Cypress House–an isolated Gulf Coast boarding house run by the beautiful Rebecca Cady–directly in the path of an approaching hurricane.

The storm isn’t the only approaching danger, though. A much deadlier force controls the county and everyone living in it, and Arlen wants out–fast. But Paul refuses to abandon Rebecca to face the threats alone, even though Arlen’s eerie gift warns that if they stay too long they may never leave. From its chilling beginning to terrifying end, The Cypress House is a story of relentless suspense from “one of the best of the best” (Michael Connelly).
