Free Audiobook – Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness ($0.99 Kindle, $21.83 Audible), by Joseph Conrad, narrated by Seth D. Anderson, is this month’s free audiobook from LearnOutLoud.com (DRM-Free).

I’ve actually linked in a different audio edition from Audible, both because this exact free edition doesn’t exist there, but also because you can get the Dover Thrift Kindle edition linked here, then pick up the Audible Edition, which features a Signature Performance by Kenneth Branagh, for another $0.99. Be sure to follow the link at the bottom of the post for the free edition.

Book Description
Heart of Darkness is a short novel that follows a voyage up the Congo River, deep into the heart of Africa. As narrated by the world-weary Marlow, this emotionally complex narrative focuses on a brilliant ivory trader named Kurtz and what happens to “civilized” men once they lose track of their moral compass.

Central to Conrad’s work is the idea that there is little difference between so-called civilized people and those described as savages; Heart of Darkness raises important questions about imperialism and racism.

About the Audible Edition
Prose that demands to be read aloud requires a special kind of narrator. For the Audible Signature Classics edition of Joseph Conrad’s atmospheric masterpiece, Heart of Darkness, we called upon four-time Academy Award nominee Kenneth Branagh.

Branagh’s performance is riveting because he reads as though he’s telling a ghost story by a campfire, capturing the story’s sense of claustrophobia, while hinting at the storyteller Marlow’s own creeping madness. Heart of Darkness follows Captain Marlow into the colonial Congo where he searches for a mysterious ivory trader, Kurtz, and discovers an evil that will haunt him forever.

With this landmark work, Conrad is credited with bringing the novel into the twentieth century; we think Branagh brings it into the twenty-first.

Stay tuned for more one-of-a-kind performances from actors David Hyde Pierce, Leelee Sobieski, Tim Curry, and more, only from Audible Signature Classics.

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is Exposure ($1.99), by Alan Russell [Thomas & Mercer]. Penzler Pick, April 2002; Publishers Weekly Starred Review

Book Description
Capturing the seedy and sordid side of life isn’t anything new for photojournalist-turned-paparazzo Graham Wells. But when a shoot turns deadly—secretly causing the car crash that takes the lives of two beloved public figures—he knows the ensuing media spotlight could easily destroy him. Fortunately, no one else knows his shameful secret except for a mysterious CIA operative, and that clandestine agent swears he’ll keep quiet…for a price.

Blackmailed into documenting the orchestrated downfalls of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Graham finds his role in the operation disturbingly murky. But the picture soon begins to clear and comes into horrifying focus after he prevents the suicide of celebrated actress Lanie Byrne, revealing a sprawling web of lies that reaches from the glittering lights of Hollywood to the dark political intrigue of Europe and Washington, DC.

A page-turning thriller, Alan Russell’s Exposure is a fast-paced and riveting read focusing on an international conspiracy and a truth-seeking antihero armed only with a camera.

Revised edition: This edition of Exposure includes editorial revisions.

Free Book – Doña Barbara

Doña Barbara ($17.00 $9.99 Kindle), by Rómulo Gallegos, translated by Robert Malloy, is this month’s free book from The University of Chicago Press.

Book Description
Rómulo Gallegos is best known for being Venezuela’s first democratically elected president. But in his native land he is equally famous as a writer responsible for one of Venezuela’s literary treasures, the novel Doña Barbara. Published in 1929 and all but forgotten by Anglophone readers, Doña Barbara is one of the first examples of magical realism, laying the groundwork for later authors such as Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa.

About the Author
Rómulo Gallegos (1889–1969) was a Venezuelan novelist and politician who served briefly as the nation’s first democratically elected president. After publishing Doña Barbara, he was forced to flee to Spain but returned in 1936 to hold a variety of political offices. He was again forced out by a coup d’etat in 1948, returned in 1958, then was elected senator for life.

Sign up for the free book from the University of Chicago. You’ll need to enter your email address, then check your email for the link to download the book. Mine arrived within seconds — you get a .ACSM file, which, when opened, will load the book inside of Adobe ADE. This is a DRM’d file and is not compatible with eInk Kindles, but can be read using Aldiko on a Kindle Fire.

Two Free Audiobooks – Courage Has No Color & In the Heat of the Night

It’s time for this week’s free audiobooks from Sync. I’ve linked in the info from the ebook or audiobook version of each title (Amazon has the best reviews), followed by the link to get your copies free, with directions to ensure you get the complete download. You’ll need the Overdrive Console loaded (directions are on Sync’s website) and I suggest you use the desktop app to ensure you download a copy for backup purposes.

Start off with Courage Has No Color, The True Story of the Triple Nickles ($9.17 Kindle; $16.09 Audible), by Tanya Lee Stone [Candlewick], narrated by J.D. Jackson [Brilliance Audio]. Starred Reviews: Booklist, School Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly

Book Description
World War II was raging, with thousands of American soldiers fighting overseas against the injustices brought on by Hitler. Back on the home front, the injustice of discrimination against African Americans was playing out as much on Main Street as in the military. Enlisted black men were segregated from white soldiers and regularly relegated to service duties.

At Fort Benning, Georgia, First Sergeant Walter Morris’s men served as guards at The Parachute School while the white soldiers prepared to be paratroopers. Morris knew that in order for his men to be treated like soldiers, they would have to train and act like them, but would the military elite and politicians recognize the potential of these men, as well as their passion for serving their country? Tanya Lee Stone examines the role of African Americans in the military through the lens of the untold story of the Triple Nickles as they became America’s first black paratroopers and fought a little-known World War II attack on the American West by the Japanese. The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, in the words of Morris, “proved that the color of a man had nothing to do with his ability.”

Age Level: 10 and up; Grade Level: 5 and up

John Ball’s In the Heat of the Night ($4.95 Audible), by Matt Pelfrey, narrated by Ryan Vincent Anderson, Michael Hammond, Kalen Harriman, Travis Johns, James Morrison, Darren Richardson and Tom Virtue [L.A. Theatre Works], is the second selection for this week.

Book Description
Based on John Ball’s novel which inspired the Oscar-winning film and the Emmy-winning television series, In the Heat of the Night pits a visiting black detective from California against a small Alabama town simmering with anger over desegregation. A fitting reflection of America in the 1960s, this Off-Broadway hit is provocative, timely, and uncomfortably relevant.

An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast recording, featuring Ryan Vincent Anderson, Michael Hammond, Kalen Harriman, Travis Johns, James Morrison, Darren Richardson, and Tom Virtue. Directed by Brian Kite. Recorded before a live audience by L.A. Theatre Works.

Click HERE to get the free downloads. For each book, click on the audiobook cover, enter your name and an email address, then click on the Get your FREE download now button; on some systems, you’ll be prompted to save an ODM file (others will run it automatically) and, if so, save it to your desktop, then click it after it downloads, to start Overdrive. Don’t stop until you see the Overdrive software open up (there is a link at Sync, if you don’t already have Overdrive installed).

Once in Overdrive, you’ll need to tell it where to save the files (just click OK to use the default location, since Overdrive will keep track of them for you), then again to actually start the download. By default, all parts of the book are downloaded; I would suggest not changing this in the last dialog box, just click on OK to get the download started. Make sure your audiobook is fully downloaded before the end of the week, as once the promo period is over, you won’t be able to get these for free (you can double click any title in Overdrive and will get a message that either it entirely downloaded or you’ll get a list of the “parts” and can download the ones that you don’t have).

You can’t get any titles that have been missed, but once they are loaded into Overdrive (which you will need to install, if you are not already using it for library books), they are yours to keep (there is no expiration date).

The Kobo Daily Deal also has a couple of thrillers that look interesting, one by Matthew Reilly and the other by Colleen Gleason writing as C. M. Gleason. I just checked a coupon code I picked up in the Kobo Trivia contest and it works on at least the latter title. The Audible Daily Deal, Three: Legends of the Duskwalker #1 by Jay Posey, is a book that I enjoyed (and the narrator is pretty good) and should appeal to fans of Young Adult/New Adult Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction. In the Kindle Daily Deals, Jeff VanderMeer’s Finch is clearly a Fantasy title, but also is squarely in the Noir Crime Fiction genre. I’ve read a couple of his other novels and will definitely be sampling this one today.

Free Book – The Library Fuzz Minipack

The Library Fuzz Minipack, a 5-story sample from The Library Fuzz MEGAPACK ($0.99 Kindle), by James Holding, is free direct from publisher Wildside Press. This was supposed to be last week’s free download, but they removed it from the site, due to a metadata problem with the files, but have added it back as a bonus download for this week. If you downloaded it last week, during the short time it was available, be sure to get the updated file today. Note, however, that the metadata for the Mobi version appears to still be incorrect (it says it’s the Walt Whitman MegaPack); I just fixed mine in Calibre and won’t worry about it.

Book Description
James Holding (1907-1997) was a prolific short story author in the mystery field. (He also wrote children’s books—including the Ellery Queen Jr. series—but short stories were his true domain.) Among the many series he created, the “Library Fuzz” stories, about a detective Hal Johnson who tracks down overdue library books (and often stumbles across crimes) is one of the most usual…and fun!

This MINIPACK™ collects the first 5 “Library Fuzz” stories. If you enjoy them, you can also pick up The Library Fuzz MEGAPACK™, which includes 20 stories.

Enjoy!

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is Deja Dead ($2.99), the first novel in the excellent Temperance Brennan series by Kathy Reichs [Scribner / Simon and Schuster].

Book Description
The raves are in — from Edgar-winning authors and internationally acclaimed forensic experts: Kathy Reichs and Déjà Dead are something special.

Rarely has a debut crime novel inspired such widespread excitement. A born storyteller, Dr. Kathy Reichs walks in the steps of her heroine, Dr. Temperance Brennan. She spends her days in the autopsy suite, the courtroom, the crime lab, with cops, and at exhumation sites. Often her long days turn into harrowing nights.

It’s June in Montreal, and Tempe, who has left a shaky marriage back home in North Carolina to take on the challenging assignment of director of forensic anthropology for the province of Quebec, looks forward to a relaxing weekend.

First, though, she must stop at a newly uncovered burial site in the heart of the city. One look at the decomposed and decapitated corpse, stored neatly in plastic bags, tells her she’ll spend the weekend in the crime lab. This is homicide of the worst kind. To begin to find some answers, Tempe must first identify the victim. Who is this person with the reddish hair and a small bone structure?

New Release Books

Today’s first Featured New Release is Kitchens of the Great Midwest: A Novel ($9.99 Kindle), by J. Ryan Stradal [Pamela Dorman Books / Penguin]. Library Journal Starred Review

Book Description
Kitchens of the Great Midwest, about a young woman with a once-in-a-generation palate who becomes the iconic chef behind the country’s most coveted dinner reservation, is the summer’s most hotly-anticipated debut.

When Lars Thorvald’s wife, Cynthia, falls in love with wine—and a dashing sommelier—he’s left to raise their baby, Eva, on his own. He’s determined to pass on his love of food to his daughter—starting with puréed pork shoulder. As Eva grows, she finds her solace and salvation in the flavors of her native Minnesota. From Scandinavian lutefisk to hydroponic chocolate habaneros, each ingredient represents one part of Eva’s journey as she becomes the star chef behind a legendary and secretive pop-up supper club, culminating in an opulent and emotional feast that’s a testament to her spirit and resilience.

Each chapter in J. Ryan Stradal’s startlingly original debut tells the story of a single dish and character, at once capturing the zeitgeist of the Midwest, the rise of foodie culture, and delving into the ways food creates community and a sense of identity. By turns quirky, hilarious, and vividly sensory, Kitchens of the Great Midwest is an unexpected mother-daughter story about the bittersweet nature of life—its missed opportunities and its joyful surprises. It marks the entry of a brilliant new talent.

“Foodies and those who love contemporary literature will devour this novel that is being compared to Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge. A standout.” —Library Journal

About the Author
J. Ryan Stradal’s writing has appeared in The Rumpus, Los Angeles Review of Books, Rattling Wall, McSweeney’s: The Goods, and Hobart, among other places, and he edits the fiction section of The Nervous Breakdown.
